Bob is an artist and professor of architecture, based in northwest Connecticut and western Massachusetts. His work focuses on novel experiments with materials and methods of making. It emphasizes the physical structure, often highlighting unique connections and joinery. It blends advanced computational design methods and computer-controlled fabrication equipment with analog hand-craft techniques.

“The month that I spent at Buffalo Creek was the most productive and transformative period of my artistic career. The gift of time is often the most valuable thing an artist can receive, and the ability to work seven days a week, with no other obligations or distractions, is a rare privilege. To be given that opportunity while immersed in such a spectacular landscape, with perfect weather for working long days, in fully outfitted studios, is rarer still.

The most important thing this residency allowed me to do was to take big risks with my work and move it in new directions. Ideas that existed in sketches and rudimentary experiments were finally put into action. This required me to learn some new skills that have a very steep learning curve. By having days on end to practice and a solid period to drive those skills deeply into muscle memory, I was able to develop new craft techniques that would have otherwise taken years. The outcome was a sculpture that was a giant leap forward in my body of work and has since opened many doors.

Those connections that were made as a result of being at Buffalo Creek can’t be understated. An open studio day was a great opportunity to show my work in progress and have amazing discussions with visitors. Warm camaraderie with my fellow artists developed through many lunchtime and evening conversations and dropping in to see each other’s developing work. Extensive social media exposure continues to bring me new connections worldwide, even months after leaving. There was strong support and jovial encouragement from the staff, Bill, and Tony. And it was the overall warmth and hospitality of Steve and Lana that set the tone for a perfect residency experience.”
