Francis is a mixed media artist who attended the Baum School of Art, Allentown, PA from 1985 to 1989. She lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While at Buffalo Creek Art Center she made a number of sculptures from material she found on the property.

“My residency at Buffalo Creek was an adventure in pushing my creative boundaries. I arrived from Phila without supplies as my intention was for the land and environment to speak to me. I decided to honor past artists by giving new life to the remnants of past sculptures when I found a large corral of rusty metal, wood and most interesting objects. On a walk I discovered a dried up pond off the beaten path that spoke to me as the perfect location for my installation “In Balance with Nature” using the rusty remnants. My intention for this installation was to demonstrate how we all are part of nature. I assembled, painted and manipulated the remnants and inserted them into the rocks, mud and foliage in the pond. I also retrieved a large maquette created by William Lanzillo and with his permission transformed his maquette into an ephemeral piece texturized by inserting roofing paper creating a rhythmic shadow pattern.

My experience at Buffalo Creek has strengthened my inner voice allowing me time to explore and absorb nature with its amazing topography. Watching my fellow artists move through their processes was an added benefit, as well as enjoying great comradery. The staff, Mel and Bill were outstanding hosts making my stay delightful. Steve Hardy is one generous creative soul with his dedication in supporting artists of all genres. I loved being out West!”
