Heath Satow is a self-taught metal sculptor who has created over 30 public sculptures worldwide. Inspired early in his career by Martin Puryear and Anish Kapoor he is keenly In touch with the skill of craftsmanship and the singularity of materials that creates a focus on form and importance of the object itself outside of any narrative. His project and contribution to BCAC was a 17-foot steel and stainless-steel sculpture, “Cor” in honor of his father who had recently passed. Heath graduated from the College of Design at North Carolina State University in 1991.

“My full-time job is designing, fabricating, and installing public art. I always have a client. And while I love the work, I wanted to make something large that was only built to satisfy me. No client. I had done this once prior in my career at an artist symposium in South Korea, and the experience was career-changing. And when I saw Buffalo Creek Art Center on Instagram, I decided this would be a great place to have a similar experience in that regard. In the time between being accepted to create work at BCAC and arriving there, my father passed. So I knew right then my work there would be created to honor him. The experience was phenomenal: Steve and Bill and Mel were incredibly gracious hosts, and the other artist there, Karen Adams, was wonderful to spend time around. The best thing about the whole experience was getting to create my art in an absolutely beautiful setting among the art of so many others. Getting out and away from my usual surroundings allowed me to really focus 100% on the art I was creating, and allowed me to really think about and evaluate what I was creating in a way I normally cannot. There’s honestly nothing better for the soul than to occasionally be thrown out of your normal routines. There were also simple practical aspects to this experience: even though I have a very good, large shop of my own, working in an unfamiliar shop for a month helped me evaluate what works in my own shop and what doesn’t. All around, it was just a great experience that is helping me grow as an artist. I am so thankful to the BCAC for allowing me to have this experience.”
