Philip Vaughan was brought up in France, went to boarding school in England and now lives in Los Angeles. During almost all of this time he has painted and sculpted. This is his second visit to Buffalo Creek Art Center.

“My stay at Buffalo Creek in 2020 was centered on a body of work I am doing based on the surface of the Ocean. I worked mostly in wood, carving pieces in Buffalo Creek’s splendid new wood-shop to create a variety of smaller works based on these ideas. I also worked in the metal fabrication shop on some new constructions. The time I spent there was a real opportunity to dive into a series of ideas and to develop them in detail. That kind of solitude and focus on the work is something that is incredibly valuable to me. My time there allowed me to explore these ideas and to develop them in a way that would otherwise be very difficult anywhere else.

I am really grateful for all the support and assistance provided to me by Steve Hardy and the staff at Buffalo Creek as well as the other very talented sculptors I have met there. As an artist one could not wish for more help and encouragement. This residency is rapidly developing into one of the premiere venues for this kind of work in the USA. Its location overlooking the Carson valley is breathtaking and the accommodation and the beautifully equipped workshops are second to none in my experience.”
